Quai des Nations - Exposition Universelle Paris 1900

In first, I want to say thanks to all the people around, all girls and guys who follow my project on CgTalk since 1 year *

I can assure you that's an incredible motivation for me all along the 142 pages of this WIP thread, in this madness project of 3f reconstruction of Paris 1900 World's Fair.
The final goal is not totally clear, I've much time, but certainly one or many documentaries, if I can, and why not at the end, a book.

Of course, it remain me much work, because I've estimated it between 5 or 6 years of work... and only on my spare time.
It's far to be finish, but I've cutted the fair in many large parts, and the first one is done after this first year of work.

This first part is the most famous section of this event, a long range of 15 nation's pavilions... along the River Seine at Paris, between the Invalide's bridge and Alma's bridge.

To celebrate this first "end", I've decided to do a large picture or the 15 pavilion's panorama...

The picture in 4800 pixels :

Belgian Pavilion - Paris 1900 World's Fair

As many people here know it, I've started a personal project since february 2006 about a 3d reconstruction of the Paris 1900 World's Fair.

Each day, I'm trying to make live on CgTalk the evolution of this project in a WIP thread.

Now, after 7 months of work and 87 pages of thread, I've 10 pavilions finished and the Monumental Gate.

The latest is the Pavilion of Belgium, built along the river Seine for the Expo, it was inspired by a Belgian monument in Gothic style, of the XVIth century, the "Hotel de Ville" of Oudenaarde.

I've got the envy to show you this one now, cause I've got much pleasure to realize it.

As my project will have hundreds buildings and so much other things, I must manage the weight of each element, and of couse, I've defined a polycount average for each one...
...but for the Belgian pavilion, I must acknowledge to be largerly over this average... ;-)

I just hope you like it as I lke it...
Started since february 2006, the project grow slowly but surely... during the modeling and texturing cessions, I profit to do much tests of rendering to obtain a special mood, to be near to the spirit of this time, but not in black and white...

Here's a latest test about this mood, rendered wit MR and composited in After Effects, the final goal of this realisation is of course a movie.

April 14, 1900 Paris World's Fair...

We're the April 14 of 1900... the World's Fair of the new century will open in few hours.

Yet, there's thousands of people, ready to enter, ready do visit, ready for this incredible journey in the most interesting and incredibles existing things on earth... claimed the genius of the human race, but also the peace.

In the same time, a fantastic guy, Mister Alberto-Santos Dumont, thanks to his hard work as pioneer of aerostation, start to be the privilegied witness of this moment, taking off on boards of his airship, in order to discover this event, in a different and resolutely modern way at this time...

The idea is born of a real passion for this great event of 1900, the World's Fair of Paris.

Of course, the action on this picture is totally fictive. Santos-Dumont never flew above this World's Fair. But this airship really existed in 1900, the "number 4" builded by Santos-Dumont, and it really flew. It was only the next year, in 1901 that his "number_6" made the famous flight around the Eiffel tower.

I've made much documentations researches about this airship to be near of the reality, even for the pilot, I was inspired by real photos of this pioneer.

The action is situated at the actual Paris Concorde Place, where was build this Monumental Gate, created by the architect Mr Binet, high of 40 meters, with a spectacular statue at the top, representing a modern woman, symbol of the City of Paris.

I've worked on much documentations of this time to add all the real details, trying to find much informations about shapes, details and colours.

All details added could near of the reality, it's a real reconstruction of this building, witness of this time, and immediately destruct after this event.

In foreground, we can see all this crowd already waiting the grand opening, along the river Seine, in the early morning... with this little fog of april...

For this still image, I want a style which fix this moment of the ancient time, a little bit as these 1900's colorized postcards, when the time stoped for us. As if this postcard rest the only memory of this incredible moment.

I hope you like, and if I have just one request, it's especially to know how you interprate this vision, what is your feeling front of this moment ?

With my actual project of World's Fairs reconstruction, this design and this mood comes to be really a part of me, my own feeling, and of course, I can't be really objective becaise it's now my universe.

While waiting, thanks for your interest...

I do a lot of intermediate pictures, in the 3 months of contest, and I want to finish the story, the story I have imagined, by an altimate one... the return in earth, we imagine few years after "the first travel" (name of my GSO entry).
The scene was inspired by a "house" of the Universal Exposition of Paris, in 1900... A place of choice for the final landing... The Space Station pull by many Space Sailors, under the glances of some lucky people.
My sister don't have any precise idea or demand, she only wished that it was in touch with the subject of this marriage, the oriental culture.
I choose to do something a bit romantic, as certain illustrations of the 19th century.
The picture represent a small street of an oriental city. We guess, at the background, a wedding procession which gets ready.

The Real Knowledge's Face...

There's my participation to the "Spectacular" Challenge...
Lot of messages are in this picture... but to resume... we can all find spectacular things in knowledge.
The Story :
The Real Knowledge's Face...
What is Knowledge ? Certainly what it push us to grow, to evolve, to be better, to be more interesting.
Knowledge push us towards certain goals which can give us better life, and of course, interesting life, in fact, the reason to live.
To what seem Knowledge ? Knowledge must certainly be compared to the most beautiful living thing in our life... and if we must give a face to Knowledge, we can certainly offer it the one of the woman. That also give to Knowledge this part of Wisdom, of the woman, or maybe as a mother.
It's also the role of a girl, to exprim a kind of desire, a kind of beauty, she's beautiful as Knowledge.
She have some simple clothes, but richly orned, inspired by the 1900' style, current symbol of the Knowledge and Techniques Revolution. A style already inspired by Ancient Egypt, another great symbol of an old and very important Culture.
She's the Mother of our knowledge. But she only can grow thanks to the know, to the learn, to the experience, to the skills... She builds of these books sheets, which contain the main of Knowledge. These are our bases.
This Knowledge, accumulated during lot of centuries, by the people of our earth, seem emerge of the hole, or more of the Knowledge's Well...
This Knowledge Mother carry the symbol of these stored Knowledge, the grand book... Open towards the futur, it left fly away, disperse, this Knowledge materialized by this flight of thirteen BlueBirds.
These are the birds which will offer to all the people around the world, this richness of Knowledge.
This Knowledge represent the real light of our life, our existence. It offer us the luminous emanation, almost magical, in this old medieval library symbol of these passed years, constituted more and more of this Knowledge thanks to its many books.
It the only thing which can permit us to leave the primitive life, to leave this sad life, sadness representing by this sad and cold forest, with naked sad trees.
We can understand the attirance about this new interesting and rich life. It's enough to watch these Wildkids, they feel the magic attraction of this Knowledge which push them to evolve, for their good, their happiness, and the one of their own society.
All people on earth can have access to the Knowledge, as representend by these five Wildkids because they come from the five continents.
No discrimination can exists about Knowledge, it's the real Knowledge's Face !
I hope you appreciate my work on this entry... and you can find all these little details inspired by the messages.
If you are interesting by the progress... you can see the slideshow of these 262 WIP images, while clicking on this link...

Dewoitine D.520

Good... after few months in the wall cupboards, the return of the bird...
in a small "possible" composition implementing the airplane of the french "Adjudant Andre Carrier", sadly known to have been the first killed on Dewoitine D520... on May 14, 1940...
this scene is held little before these airplanes separate, and that these BF109 of the I./JG2 fall to them above between Cheveuge and Fresnois, in the Ardennes region, in France...
The 2 others D.520 are those of the second lieutenant Salaberry and the sergeant Albert.
As often, I prefer to rather give to my image a quite particular atmosphere, which "sticks" with the subject, than to leave the place with the aspect 3d a little too cold and impersonal.
I have thus to try here to bring me closer a true "illustration"...
I hope that you will appreciate ;-)
Now, it's finish and results behind... then, comments and crits of the final picture are welcome...
I know this picture have a special atmosphere.. some people love it, and some people hate it, generally, no middle.
My choice, for the final image was to have something of non-realistic... a bit more like a painting, or something like that. I think it's very important to forget that this image was in 3d... the technology of our 3d software wasn't important for me, it's only a medium like a pen, oil painting, watercolour, etc...
Usually, I work especially in 3d... but it's finally very resting, between hard 3d projects, to draw a little.
It's my real second digital portrait. The first was made only in Photoshop, but for this one, I mixed the couple Photoshop/Painter.
First black drawing was made in Photoshop, as the rough coloring... but the real painting operation is for PainterX, incredible software with its marvellous brushes (maybe too much).
But unfortunetely... to much work actually obliged me to only participate to the 3d Challenge.
My entry is finish since 4 days... and the last weekend, I decided to do anyway my Spectacular entry in 2d, based on my 3d participation.
A little bit more of 2 nights of insomny to made this new picture, the other vision of the Knowledge's Face.
I started to draw in Photoshop... relatively precisely, but not really beautiful... just because I've planed to paint it in Painter, but I'm more accustomed to draw in photoshop.
This first step finished... I continu to paint it with my prefered tools in Painter : the "dry bristle and the "dry palette knife".
That permit me to work with a style I like, finally very near of my traditional technics (long times ago...)
After this painting work, back to Photoshop to adjust tones, add some effects...
I hope you appreciate it...
Little resume of the story :
With time, the human race it is controlled to the profit of the domestic appliances, taking control on them. The men have undergoes a change and became these Humano-IDs, unsexued, deprived of any sense and any thought. They're differentiable between them only by the bare code that they are in the back. Their existence is entirely devoted to these machines. Mother Nature will try to take again her rights. The rights which she had on these humans who she gave birth to, by disencumbering surface of the ground of all these electro-domestics appliances.
